Description & Details

Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B) VR simulator.

Fly this aircraft equipped with Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS-B) Out and In technology and see what it looks like from the cockpit as aircraft appear on your instrument panel and out of the horizon. You will experience a level of situational awareness and safety you don't have when flying without ADS-B in this cutting-edge Virtual Reality (VR) application from the Federal Aviation Administration. The plane’s traffic display on the bottom right-hand side lets you track your surroundings and identify approaching planes long before you see them through the cockpit window.

Aircraft that fly in most controlled airspace must be equipped with ADS-B Out by December 31, 2019. Will you be ready?

The app tried and missed-like the airplanes you'll avoid thanks to ADS-B. Considering the possibilities, this app is rather boorish and I doubt it achieves its intended purpose. As a researcher in VR, the apps inability to make the user feel 'presence' minimizes the level of immersion which in turn won't generate the obvious respect/admiration/usefulness of ADS-B. Some criticism for the makers: 1) the inability to move forward/backwards in the cockpit (to look around the beam when 10 o'clock is called out) hinders a more immersive and therefore more believable feeling of being in the cockpit. While this is usually not do-able through a google cardboard device, placing approaching airplanes in a 3 or 9 o'clock position would have made this flaw less obvious. 2) The quality of animation. Considering this is a ~3 minute loop, it could have been useful to utilize less animation, and more real imagery/3D picture of a cockpit. 3) The worst part, which coincidentally throws the user out of the 'believably' of this experience is the lack of sound when an airplane passes by just meters from the plane. A simple recording from an airshow could have made a huge difference!
